Real democracy is political system in which:
- conditions exist to fully empower all citizens to realize their individual capabilities.
- absence of inequalities in power across groups
Democracy is therefore not just about elections (although they are important).
It is about having a variety of conditions in place to be able to have real power.

The approach is an alternative to traditional liberal and electoral approaches to democracy.
It has real world implications for policy, institutions and politics.
The approach was first set out by Toby James in New Political Science.
The website will include links to academic papers, blogs and books as they are published.
